Tom Dwyer Automotive
At Tom Dwyer Automotive Services, Inc. (TDASI), a strong commitment to sustainable business practices has helped the shop thrive as a business while becoming a vital contributor in the community it serves. A champion of environmental waste reduction, Dwyer's shop provides high quality automotive services produced with fair labor practices and minimal impact on the environment. This commitment to people and the planet has helped TDASI build a long list of loyal customers, some of whom have been bringing their cars to Dwyer since he started working out of his garage over 28 years ago. In 2008, it also earned the shop the title of "Best Place to Get Your Car Fixed" from Willamette Week.
Respecting employees and paying a living wage results in a stable staff made up almost entirely of ASE-Certified and ASE-Master-Certified technicians in a field where most other shops have high turnover and only a few ASE-Certified techs at all.
Dwyer is a multi-faceted personality with progressive political views who believes in “walking the talk” of a sustainable business. He’s part educator, part philanthropist, and part social entrepreneur, but above all, he’s your family car doctor. He’ll keep your car a healthy and happy part of the family for as long as possible.
Environmental Practices
Dwyer has been a leader of sound environmental practices since long before "going green" was an important goal in business:
- The shop is 100% carbon neutral and all emissions, down to test driving cars, are offset by green power.
- TDASI is a completely dry shop, meaning all used fluids are captured in barrels and kept out of the river.
- Aqueous parts washers rely solely on hot water and steam instead of highly corrosive detergents used by most washers.
- The shop is heated with used oil from the cars being serviced.
- The courtesy shuttles have been converted to run on ethanol and flex fuels. Tom's interest in ethanol has led him to start a side business to help small cooperatives and farmers distill ethanol in their own still systems to get completely off the gasoline grid.
- The shop is almost completely closed-loop and has been recycling every expendable -- from filters and mercury switches to metal parts and used motor oil -- for over a decade.
- Carbon offsets are a cornerstone of Dwyer's environmental commitment. In 2007 he partnered with Bonneville Environmental Foundation to start the Tom Dwyer Automotive Carbon Neutral Program. The program has already offset over 1,250,000 pounds of carbon emissions since its inception.
Supporting an internal combustion engine transportation economy may not be TDASI’s first choice, but since that’s what we’re stuck with for now, Dwyer's goal is to support it with as little impact as possible. A well-maintained car pollutes less, uses less gas, stays out of landfill, and allows people to spend their money on more important things. And when people start putting their money on electric vehicles, TDASI will be more than ready to maintain them -- it's one of the only places to get your electric car serviced today. Even EV dealers don't offer that yet.
